A word from our founder
Like many I have always been aware of my impact on the world and have strived to reduce that wherever possible. In 2016, I gave up meat completely after watching a few recommended documentaries, I try to shop locally for many reasons, and I cycle to work (weather permitting). It was becoming a father for the first time in 2020 that really got me thinking about the future and how we can reduce the impact we are having on the world. Not just for us – but for our children, and their children.
General Questions
Where are my trees planted?
Our trees are planted primarily in Madagascar. We have chosen Madagascar as the rate of deforestation here (85%+!) has had a devastating effect on local ecosystems. With 90% of wildlife not found anywhere else on the planet, and the average wage here under $1 per day we can help the environment, ecosystems and some of the most impoverished people on Earth all at the same time.
Why are your offsets cheaper than competitors?
We have less overheads in short. We want as much of our revenue to go towards what our business was set up to do, offsetting carbon. We don’t waste money on vanity projects. We find our customers want to know they have offset their impact and don’t need all the added extras that swallow up money but don’t actually meet the objectives of the business. Fun fact: our founder donates his salary back in to the business for this very reason.
What is the survival rate of the trees planted?
The survival rate is 80%, but from years 3 – 5 the mangroves produce their own propagules and so the net effect is up to 500%!
Can I have a photo of my trees?
Unfortunately due to the sites where the trees are planted it is not possible to provide a photo of your trees. We have teamed up with The Eden Foundation and they provide invoices for trees bought. They have independent auditors yearly verify the sites they plant trees at and have an exemplary record. We also give a unique code to each tree bought so we can trace each tree back to the Offsetr. What trees are planted?
The vast majority are Mangroves.
Why Mangroves?
Scientific studies have shown that Mangroves “sequester carbon at a rate of two to four times greater than mature tropical forests, and contain the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems” (Fatoyinbo et al, 2017.) Each mangrove planted removes 308kg (680lbs) of CO2 from the atmosphere over the growth life of the tree.
